About the City
Ajaccio is the capital of the territorial collectivity of Corsica and the prefecture of the department of Corse-du-Sud. It is located on the west coast of Corsica, at the bottom of the Gulf Ajaccio.
City Areas
Ajaccio is situated on the west coast of Corsica, southeast of Marseille. In a sheltered position at the foot of wooded hills on the northern shore, the harbor lies to the east of the town and is protected on the southern side by a peninsula.
Attractions
Ajaccio is the birth place of Napoleon Bonaparte, as such the city has a number of statues scattered around portraying the emperor in different ways. The house where the famous ruler was born still stands and has been transformed into a museum dedicated to the monarch.
Transportation
Corsica is mainly reachable by boat or plane, so to get to Ajaccio by train or car you have to reach Corsica first. Once there, you have a variety of train choices or you could just rent a car and drive to Ajaccio.
Events
Ajaccio is host to a number of unique events that take place just once in life, but also to some recurring ones. The events that come back every year are only a handful, however they are the reason Ajaccio is so full of life.
History and Civilization
The town is believed to have been a Roman settlement called Adiacium. Raided and destroyed by the Saracens the town was rebuilt 3 km to the south by the Genoese Republic in the late 15th century.
Restaurants & Nightlife
Dining out in Ajaccio can be a unique experience. The town is mainly specialized in seafood but it isn’t unlikely to find one or two restaurants that have nothing to do with seafood, but instead offer grill specialties or other kinds of cuisines.
When to go
Like any other seaside town, the best time to visit Ajaccio is of course summer. But if you don’t like the cold to much then you can also visit Ajaccio in winter, as the temperatures don’t drop that much due to the sea breeze, which keeps the climate temperately balanced.
